Funky, fresh and recognisable from a number of TV ads including Uber, the 2014 Phones 4 U campaign and most recently Now TV. Music from Saint Motel has featured multiple times on FIFA in both 2015 and 2017. Some readers amongst you may know that Coasts were on the 2016 version. Having never played FIFA myself (maybe once but I’m pretty sure I was rubbish) I’ll have to take the internet’s word for it.
The music genre of the LA foursome has been described as a variety of different styles from indie pop, progressive indie and (my favourite) dream pop. By bringing together a number of different styles and instruments, Saint Motel create an effervescent style which is sure to make you ‘move’
Local Leeds lads Happy Daggers brought the toe tapping, feel good vibes which were simply falsetto-tastic. Personal favourites included
Closer and dance floor filling (ok there were four of us but that still counts right?) Get Yourself Together. Another worthy mention in the keyboard player’s Game Of Thrones t-shirt proclaiming that ‘Winter Is Here’
Victors (also from Leeds) had that electronic pop sound and a whole lot of bass (literally my whole being was vibrating)
‘Stay With Me,’ the first ever song that the band wrote together was an uplifting booty-shaker and I particularly enjoyed ‘Holding On’
Finally it was time for Saint Motel and there were slightly more than four of us on the dance floor, quite an impressive turnout for a Tuesday night actually.
It has been two years since Saint Motel were last in Leeds so to saw that their presence was eagerly anticipated would be an understatement and I was jostled around quite a bit by die hard fans to get to the front. I won in the end.
If I were to describe Saint Motel’s set in three words it would be: explosive, awesome, saxophone.
Really though the sax was one of the highlights of the set and the instantly recognisable intro to ‘Just My Type’ has got me hooked.
There was so many great moments of the night including AJ joining the audience during the encore, high- fives all round and stellar sax solos.
Saint Motel are known to have said that they aim to deliver a ‘big, crazy experience whenever [people come] to see us.” Well they certainly delivered!!! If you are in the U.K. You can catch them at Latitude fest on Friday.
Top tunes of the night included
‘You can be you’ the hippyish ‘Benny Howard’ and the fan favourite ‘My Type’
